Our commitment

Joint Journey is designed for people preparing for joint replacement surgery — many of whom may have visual, motor, or cognitive accessibility needs. We are committed to ensuring that our website and programme are accessible to as many people as possible, regardless of ability or the technology they use.

We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standard.

What we've done

We have taken the following steps to ensure accessibility:

• Semantic HTML — we use proper headings, landmarks (<main>, <nav>, <header>, <footer>), and ARIA labels throughout the site
• Keyboard navigation — all interactive elements (links, buttons, form fields, collapsible sections) can be accessed and operated using a keyboard alone
• Colour contrast — text and interactive elements meet WCAG AA contrast ratio requirements (minimum 4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text)
• Responsive design — the site works on screens from mobile phones to large desktop monitors
• Clear language — content is written in plain English, avoiding unnecessary medical jargon
• Focus indicators — visible focus outlines are provided for keyboard users
• Form labels — all form inputs have associated labels
• Reduced motion — animations are disabled when the user has set prefers-reduced-motion in their operating system
• Text sizing — the site uses relative font sizes that scale with browser text size settings

Automated testing

We regularly test Joint Journey using:

• Google Lighthouse — accessibility audit (current score: 95/100)
• Manual keyboard testing — tabbing through all pages to verify navigation and focus order
• VoiceOver (macOS) — screen reader testing on key user journeys

Known limitations

We are aware of the following accessibility limitations and are working to address them:

• Exercise videos — where we link to third-party exercise videos (e.g., on YouTube), we cannot guarantee those videos have captions or audio descriptions. We provide written exercise descriptions as an alternative.
• PDF downloads — some downloadable resources may not be fully screen-reader accessible. We aim to provide HTML alternatives where possible.

We aim to respond to accessibility feedback within 5 working days, and to resolve any issues as quickly as possible.

Enforcement

Joint Journey is a private service and is not currently subject to the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018. However, we voluntarily aim to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA because we believe everyone preparing for surgery deserves equal access to support.
